Patsy's Story

In November 2008 my 20-year-old daughter, Jamie, almost lost her life to a serious, yet potentially vaccine-preventable bacterial infection called meningococcal disease. By the grace of God Jamie survived the disease, but will face long-term consequences as a result.

On February 6, 2009, doctors at St. Joseph Hospital in Houston amputated both of Jamie's legs below her knees and removed most of her fingers on both hands. In total, Jamie remained in the hospital for over 6 months. She still had several months of painstaking surgery ahead of her and will face years of rehabilitation, but with the help of her family and friends, she will endure her trials and surpass all expectations as she has done in the past.

Jamie is recuperating and has learned to walk on her prosthetics. She hopes to once again partake in the activities she loves, such as scuba diving and volleyball. She
has returned to school to continue her studies in The School of Natural Sciences.

While I was aware that a vaccine existed for meningococcal disease, I did not have Jamie vaccinated. She was not educated in the risk for the disease and doctors never discussed with her the importance of vaccination. To help prevent other families from experiencing this devastating disease, I joined the fight against meningitis.

In 2009 the Schanbaum Family were active in passing a law in the State of Texas. The Jamie Schanbaum Act became law making it mandatory for college students living in dormitories to be vaccinated against meningitis. I, along with my daughter Jamie and all our family, have now created a non-profit organization called The J.A.M.I.E.Group (Joint Advocacy for Meningococcal Information & Education) where the mission is to help Jamie share her experience & knowledge.

We are committed to lead the fight through education & community awareness and to advocate for increased information for students, parents, teachers & the medical profession. With your help, we can carry out this mission to secure a stronger and healthier community.
