The Americas Region covers both North and South America. In this region CoMO has members in Brazil, Canada, Mexico and five states of the USA.

Brazil  

PneumoMening

Established in 2002, this non-profit organisation works to help raise awareness about meningitis and help lower disease incidence among all levels of society. The organisation's members are comprised of health experts and people who have been directly affected by meningitis.

Instituto Pedro Arthur

Instituto Pedro Arthur was set up in 2006 by parents of Arthur that got meningitis in Minas Gerais State - Brazil. Instituto is a non-profit organiSation. They receive donations from companies and government (state of Minas Gerais). Even though they have been receiving strong support from government, the Instituto is not part of an academic institution. They manage to engage many companies to support their activities; they travel the country to stress the importance of immunisation and fight to stop meningitis in Brazil.

Canada

The Meningitis Research Foundation of Canada

The Meningitis Research Foundation of Canada (MRFC) is a grassroots initiative born from a mother's tragic loss of her son, Michael Longo. The organisation's mission is to raise funds to promote education and research in order to prevent death and disability from meningitis and other infections of the central nervous system. The MRFC:

  • Provides support and education to patients and their families affected by meningitis.
  • Strives to increase public awareness of meningitis.
  • Promotes better understanding of the disease among healthcare professionals.
  • Provides funds for research into improved diagnosis, treatment and prevention of meningitis.

Fundacion Illyria Velasco Carranza

The Foundation's goals are to promote vaccination, provide information to the general public about meningitis and sensitise doctors to talk to their patients about the importance of prevention through vaccination.

The Immunization Partnership

The Immunization Partnership helps individuals, physicians, and others with an interest in immunization to make smart choices about protecting our community from vaccine-preventable diseases. 

Vision: A community protected from vaccine-preventable diseases. 

Mission: To eradicate vaccine-preventable diseases by developing and coordinating our community's resources through public and private partnerships.

To fulfill our mission, we advocate evidence-based public policy that supports high immunization rates, encourage the use of immunization registries, provide educational resources at no cost to individuals and healthcare providers, and promote a "medical home" for every individual.

PneumoACTION

The PneumoACTION mission is to improve child survival and health by accelerating the evaluation of and access to new life saving pneumococcal vaccines for the world's children. The PneumoACTION team is a small, dedicated team based at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Meningitis Foundation of America

The Meningitis Foundation of America (MFA) was founded and is run by individuals who have first-hand experience with meningitis.

The MFA's main objectives are to help support sufferers of spinal meningitis and their families; provide information to educate the public and medical professionals about meningitis so that its early diagnosis and treatment will help save lives; and help support the development of vaccines and other means of treating and/or preventing meningitis.

The Becky Werner Meningitis Foundation

The Becky Werner Meningitis Foundation was created to focus attention on meningitis education and awareness in the public and medical communities. The Foundation is committed to early prevention and diagnosis of meningitis, to support research for preventative vaccines and treatments for meningitis, and to support the sufferers of meningitis and their families.

MAK – Meningitis Awareness Key to prevention

Meningitis Awareness Key to prevention (MAK) is a non-profit health education organisation dedicated to increasing public awareness about meningococcal meningitis, its symptoms and transmission, debilitating effects, risks and prevention measures. 

MAK was founded shortly after the death of MaryJo Aglubat Kwett in July 2000.  It now includes several other people whose loved ones have been affected by meningitis.

MAK fulfills its mission by providing up-to-date information through awareness presentations with adolescents and young adults as their primary target group. MAK support meningitis legislation, promote vaccination and collaborate with other organisations in the prevention of meningitis.

The J.A.M.I.E. Group – Joint Advocacy for Meningococcal Information & Education

The J.A.M.I.E. Group was formed by the family of Jamie Schanbaum who almost lost her life to meningococcal septicaemia. Their mission is to help Jamie tell her story and bring the dangers of meningitis and septicaemia to light.

Dylan McNeil Foundation

The Dylan McNeil Foundation is a small non-profit charitable organisation formed by the family of Dylan McNeil who lost his battle with pneumococcal meningitis on May 13, 2009, one day shy of his second birthday. They are determined to inform others of the signs and symptoms, update parents on recent developments and news, support vaccines and immunisations and are dedicated to funding research.
